I can't turn my key in the ignition and my steering wheel is locked what do I do?

Sometimes your vehicle will stop you from being able to turn the key in the ignition and the steering wheel will be locked. This can happen with a wide variety of vehicles.

In order to turn the key and start the vehicle, you will have to move the steering wheel from side to side, while at the same time attempting to turn the key in the ignition. When doing the two actions at the same time you can exit the steering wheel lock and then start your vehicle.

Thank you.

    Hi Johnm,

Make sure the transmission is on P for Park. When locked, the wheel will not be able to move in either direction freely, but one side will not allow any movement whatsoever (the side with the locking pin).

Determine which direction the wheel cannot move, then apply pressure in the other direction while turning the key with your other hand. It may take a few tries, but if you apply pressure to the wheel in the right direction while simultaneously turning the key it will unlock both, allowing the wheel to move freely and the vehicle to start.

Once the two are unlocked, the vehicle is able to be driven. If the steering wheel does not unlock, you will need to reach your local mechanic.
    Thank you.

I had the same problem last night.for a few tries, the road assistant was able to unlocked the steering wheel but the problem is my car doesnt want to start. While attempting to unlocked it, there was a broke sound. I thought my car's steering wheel was broken. I dont have a choice but to tow it and had it park near my apartment. What's propably wrong with my car?

    Hi Maria,

Sorry to hear about your issue. If the car doesn't want to start it could be due to various reasons. Please visit your local mechanic, so he/she may diagnose the culprit of the problem.

    Thank you.
