Why does my vehicle attempt to start three times but fail?

The most common reason for a vehicle to start, then immediately shut off is engine checking.  Compustar systems monitor voltage or tachometer signals from your vehicle to know exactly when the vehicle has started.  If there is something wrong with one of these signals, or they’ve changed; you may need to re-learn your vehicle’s tachometer signal to our unit.  This is done very simply using the following steps:

  1. Start your vehicle’s engine (Use your Key or Push-to-Start button)
  2. Press and hold the foot brake down.
  3. While keeping your foot on the brake, press the remote start button on your remote control for 3 seconds like you are remote starting the vehicle. Your parking lights will flash once.  (If they flash more than once, you may have to visit the dealer/installer)
  4. Turn the vehicle OFF.
  5. Retry starting your car with your remote control.

If re-learning the tachometer does not work, you may need to visit your installer/dealer for further troubleshooting.  Also, it is important to think of anything that has changed in the vehicle since it remote started last.  Did you change the battery, add LED lights to the interior or tail lamps?  When you visit your installer/dealer, they will want to know of any changes that have been made that may assist in troubleshooting.

Does your remote have a function button? A button with a square with an F inside? If so, press that button and hold for 6 seconds to deactivate hold. Then follow instructions above if the unit still does not work.

Dave, most likely you will need a tachometer signal programmed to the unit.

The 1WFM4R mentioned above was reprogrammed & is working 100% The dealer I went to was honest enough to say 20 minutes work so $20

I am having the same issue. It only happens when it's really cold. If it's 10 degrees or lower, it starts and dies three times every morning. If it gets warmer during the day it works fine. My dealer and I have tried reprogramming the tach, but same thing still happens when it's cold. This is happening on a push to start 2015 Subaru forester.

this saved me a trip to a repair shop!!! After charging my truck's dead battery,my remote start would turn over the engine but it would shut off right away. 3 attempts each time but would not stay running. I figured that my truck battery dying and then being recharged caused some sort of problem with the remote not seeing that the truck was running after it was remotely started.I did the above procedure, and IT WORKS !!! Thanks a million!!!

I too experience 3 start attempts this year when cold Suspect the lower than normal engine speed is the problem along with tach signal input Sometimes stays running on second or third try This is with a new battery which load tests as OK

Tried the procedure... did not solve the problem. If the engine is cold it does the 3 times start and quits. If I use the truck (2003 F-250 Diesel) and the engine gets warm it will remote start OK. I had an Avatel system that I replaced with the Artic Start and it worked fine. Very Disappointing.

Was having the same issue. F-150 would start, run for a few seconds then shut off. Would do this two more times and then stop trying altogether. After following Josh's instructions for clearing the function key by holding for 6 seconds (thanks Josh) and then Justin's procedure, I am happy to say that my starter works perfectly once again.

I've had several recalls on my 2011 F-150 Ecoboost this year so I assume the issue was inadvertently created by all the service.

@Khue Vang I have a 2016 Forester with push button start and I'm having the same issue as you, and my dealer has also installed a tach wire. Were you ever able to figure out what the issue was with yours?

I resolved my issue on my 2015 Forester XT with push button start. It was my factory battery. Took it to the dealer and tested the battery. Battery was low but now low enough that the vehicle couldn't start. My battery got warrantied with a new one and everything is fine now. Good luck on resolving your issues.

Awesome, thank you very much for the reply Khue! (I honestly wasn't expecting a reply on this old thread) My remote start dealer suggested the battery as well and said the stock battery doesn't have enough CCA's. Glad to hear it resolved the issue for you. Did the Subaru dealer replace your battery with another OEM battery (my stock XT battery has 390 CCA's) or a higher CCA battery?

I'm in MN so we actually have different warranty batteries which are higher CCA batteries than the original ones. I just wanted to help out a fellow Scooby owner. Good luck.

Cool, thanks again for the reply. I'm in Minnesota as well (although I bought mine in Illinois)...I'll have to call a local dealer.

    Hello,

My car (2006 Lexus ES330) when for a repair at a body shop where they disconnected the battery and that cause a failure of my 1-button remote start.  This happen twice before when I changed my old battery and the remote failed.  This time, I followed your procedure.  After step 4, I heard three clicks followed by one click and the remote start failed.

    1. Start your vehicle’s engine with the key.
    2. Press and hold the foot brake down.
    3. While keeping your foot on the brake, press the KEY or remote start button for 3 seconds.
    4. Release the foot brake and remove the key from the ignition.

Another shop had installed the same remote in my maxima and no battery disconnection ever caused a failure of the remote.  This one on the Lexus was installed by a professional installation place in Middletown CT.

    Please advise.

I've tried disconnecting the negative battery technical for 5 minutes connecting it back up reprogramming the remote and the remote start function will not work unless there's a key in the ignition. Without key in ignition it tries 3 times without luck with the key in the ignition in the off position it starts right up when the button is pressed.. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
